Within the context of educational activities provided by the Areopagus Institute of Family Therapy and Systemic Practice, we have encouraged and rewarded the student's meetings in smaller groups for study and intervision, as part of the extra-curricular framework that accompanies the basic training program. The English term "peers" was used in ancient times to refer to people belonging to the same societal group. The term has nowadays altered its meaning, which is closer to that of fellow or equal, in the context of a new form of participatory education that facilitates the empowering of all group's members to learn from one another and by themselves. The students have the possibility to engage in roles and responsabilities freely, negociate and establish rules of interaction, exchange information, support and challenge one-aother in reflections and debates, approach case studies, set-up projects, confront opinions, attitudes and knowledge and discuss principial issues. A peer gropup therefore also offers the students excellent opportunities of personal development.

"Feelings of worth can flourish only in an atmosphere where individual differences are appreciated, mistakes are tolerated, communication is open, and rules are flexible - the kind of atmosphere that is found in a nurturing family" (Virginia Satir)
