Group Therapy

What is group therapy?

Researchers and specialists in this field have showed that group therapy is as effective as individual therapy (Yalom, 1985; Correy, 2000). The group - considered to be a “social microcosm” - includes very diverse people, in terms of age, education, social status, life experiences, etc. In an atmosphere of trust and safety, the members of the group embark on a common “journey” in which they interact and communicate with each other in the process of exploring their selves as well as their abilities to relate to others. The objectives of group therapy are quite diverse: changes in the structures of personality, developing communication abilities, overcoming destructive behaviours (such as violence, alcoholism, substance abuse, etc), emotional support in situations of grief, trauma, divorce, terminal illness, overcoming feelings of anxiety and depression, etc. During a group therapy session, members are encouraged to express themselves freely, with honesty, respect and empathy towards the life experiences of other group members. The group dynamic and members’ interactions bring in the “here and now” the usual patterns of each person’s attitudes, feelings and behaviors. In this way, through direct interaction, feedback and group support, members have the opportunity to discover, reflect and change dysfunctional patterns for their lives.

Group Therapy

"Feelings of worth can flourish only in an atmosphere where individual differences are appreciated, mistakes are tolerated, communication is open, and rules are flexible - the kind of atmosphere that is found in a nurturing family" (Virginia Satir)
